To care for a caftan or takchita, deal with stains as soon as the celebration ends without rubbing, never machine-wash it if it is embroidered, beaded or silk, iron it inside out at a low temperature without touching the embellishments, and store it clean, folded flat or on a padded hanger, in a cotton garment bag. In Agadir, M&H Pressing cleans caftans (20 to 100 DH) and takchitas (40 to 150 DH), with the price confirmed after the garment is inspected.
A caftan or takchita is worn for a few hours but kept for years. What damages it is usually not the evening itself: it is a stain left to dry, a wash that was too hot, or storage in a plastic bag.
The right care depends on the fabric and the embellishments. Sfifa braid, aakad buttons, beads, sequins and gold-thread embroidery cannot take what a cotton garment can. And most handmade pieces have no care label, so when in doubt, be careful.
On the coast, damp gets into wardrobes easily. A garment bag that lets the fabric breathe, and a look every now and then, prevent musty smells and yellow marks.
If the piece is precious, embroidered or stained, or if you do not know what fabric it is, the safest option is to take it to a dry cleaner. At M&H, every garment is inspected before it is treated, and the price is confirmed to you at that point.
Deal with a stain quickly by dabbing it with a white cloth, without rubbing
Read the care label if there is one: many handmade caftans have none
Iron inside out, at a low temperature, with a cloth between the iron and the garment
Dry flat or on a hanger, in the shade
Store the garment clean, in a cotton bag
Put on perfume and deodorant before dressing, and let them dry
Avoid
Machine-washing an embroidered, beaded or silk piece
Hot water on a stain, which can set it
Putting the iron directly on embroidery, beads or sequins
Drying in direct sun, which fades the colours
Plastic garment bags, which trap moisture
Strong stain removers on silk and velvet
Step by step
After the celebration, in 4 steps
1
That evening
Hang the garment up so it can air, and spot the stains: make-up, food, henna, candle wax.
2
The days after
Do not leave a stain to dry for weeks: the older it gets, the harder it is to remove. Henna and grease stains are best handled early, by a professional.
3
Cleaning
Embroidered, beaded, silk or velvet pieces go to a dry cleaner. A plain cotton gandoura can often be hand-washed in cold water, if the label allows it.
4
Storage
Store the garment clean and dry, in a cotton bag, away from light. A heavy takchita is better folded flat with tissue paper between the folds; a light caftan on a padded hanger.

Not if it is embroidered, beaded, silk or velvet: the drum and the spin damage the embellishments and can distort the fabric. A plain cotton piece can sometimes be hand-washed in cold water, if the label allows it. When in doubt, take it to a dry cleaner.
Dab it gently with a clean white cloth, without rubbing and without hot water. If the stain is on silk, velvet or near embroidery, do not add any product: take the garment to a dry cleaner quickly.
Yes. A stain you cannot see on the day, such as sweat, perfume or sugar, can turn yellow over time and attract moths. A garment stored clean keeps much better.
Clean and dry, in a cotton bag rather than plastic, away from light and damp. A heavy takchita is best folded flat, with tissue paper between the folds, so its weight does not pull on the shoulders. Take it out and air it from time to time.
Inside out, at a low temperature, with a cloth between the iron and the garment, never putting the iron on embroidery, beads or sequins. For velvet, avoid crushing the pile: steaming from a distance works better. At M&H, ironing only is 10 DH for a caftan and 20 DH for a takchita.
At M&H Pressing, 20 to 100 DH for a caftan and 40 to 150 DH for a takchita, depending on the fabric, the embroidery and the work the piece requires. The price is confirmed after inspection, before work starts.
